Our FMDM story in Singapore began in 1947 when three sisters, originally missioned to China, were relocated due to unrest. After serving in Hong Kong, they were invited to Singapore to work in tuberculosis and leprosy hospitals. They arrived in 1949, marking the start of an inspiring journey.
Our Story
The sisters managed tuberculosis wards at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and cared for those suffering from leprosy at Trafalgar Home. Seeing the need, they planned Singapore’s first Catholic hospital, using their salaries and community donations. Land was bought in 1956, and Mount Alvernia Hospital opened in 1961. Today, it thrives with 300+ beds and strong Franciscan roots, serving all with love.

Caring for Life
Assisi Hospice began in 1969 as a single ward at Mount Alvernia Hospital to care for chronically ill patients. By 1971, it pioneered palliative care for cancer patients in Singapore. Today, it is an 85-bed purpose-built hospice offering Home Care, Inpatient, and Day Care services under the tagline ‘Caring for Life,’ continuing the FMDM mission of compassionate healing.

Ministry of Presence
For over 75 years, the sisters have served Singapore with unwavering faith and a Franciscan mission of presence rooted in prayer. Their ministries span parish work, pastoral care, community engagement, counselling, teaching, and even taekwondo, always dedicated to walking alongside the people and fostering hope.

Walking Together
Our elderly sisters now live a profound vocation of prayer, sustaining our community and the world. They are supported by mission partners and caregivers at St Francis Convent, ensuring vibrant life and care. FMDM Associates, married or single, lay or ordained, share this calling, pledging to live the Gospel and seek peace with God, humanity, and creation.
