In 1949, Mother Francis Spring (Mother General) was asked to mission some sisters to Yola to assist with missionary work. The first FMDM sisters arrived in Yola in July 1950, and a convent was built by the priests of O.S.A. enabling them to start the first Nigerian Community, of which there are now four.
St Francis - Yola
After arriving in Yola, the sisters served at the General Hospital, the Mission Primary School, and in pastoral ministry. The mission then expanded to Sugu for healthcare. The community closed in 1968 with the sisters relocating to Yakoko. Two decades later, the sisters returned to Yola where they remain in active ministry.

Assisi - Jos
The Jos community began in 1996. The sisters here are involved in the formation of women attracted to our way of life. They also assist in the parish, the Jos Main Prison, the Remand Home for young adults, and teaching and peace building through the DPI (Damietta Peace Initiative). The FMDM Secretariat in Jos helps in coordinating and streamlining all activities of our sisters in Nigeria.

St Clare - Tunkus
In 2014, a new FMDM community was established in Tunkus. The sisters focus on educating young minds and empowering adults, promoting organic farming within the local community, and the care of Mother Earth.

St Mary of the Angels - Abuja
St Mary of the Angels is the newest community in Nigeria. This young community is bustling with activities at the La Verna Reconciliation and Healing Garden which opened to the public in September 2025. The Garden has been developed into an environmentally friendly space where nature and the ecosystem can thrive without unnecessary interference from human activities.
