Rooted in the Past, Serving the Present, Embracing the Future

The sisters founded their first mission in Ireland over 80 years ago. From their beginnings in Ballinasloe, Co Galway to their continuing ministries today, the sisters serve with compassion and dedication, in the spirit of St Francis and St Clare of Assisi.

Rooted in the Past

In 1942, the sisters established Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.  Later St Mary of the Angels, Beaufort was opened to care for children with special needs and their families. Over the years, communities opened in Dublin, Drogheda, Kilcommon and Belfast. In the early 2000s the hospital was transferred to the Western Health Board, and St Mary of the Angels, to John of God Kerry Services.

Serving the Present

While some communities have closed, sisters continue to respond to evolving needs. Our ministries now include spiritual accompaniment, pastoral care, parish and home visiting, justice and peace making, and care of our retired sisters.

Embracing the Future

As women who have been enriched through living in various cultures, the sisters desire to live intentionally within the goodness, beauty and generosity of God; praying for the many needs of the world and contributing from their rich life experiences.
